Time to Think About Cloud ROI

CIOs need to be developing their ROI metrics for cloud now. Why? Because there may be a number of "hidden" fees that need to be added to the vendor's user "per seat" cost.

Yes.

In some cases, they are even getting their own budgets--

but I don't see them wanting to assume responsibility for managing the vendor relationship, which they don't tend to do well.

"Another trend to watch that IBM also mentioned in its Impact meetings was that end user managers (not IT) are making more of the cloud acquisition decisions."

Mary, do you mean in terms of what their demands and expectations are?

Cloud thinking and deployment is now changing at a staggering  rate, Nicole.

Another trend to watch that IBM also mentioned in its Impact meetings was that end user managers  (not IT)  are making  more of the cloud acquisition decisions.

Thanks for another sobering and important video about cloud computing, Mary. This year, and next, should be very interesting as the leaders in the cloud space come forward with what they've learned. At the IBM Impact conference last week Scott Hebner suggested that better security could become a driving reason for companies to adopt cloud. Who knows -- maybe we'll come to find out that cost-savings isn't a reason to move to cloud, and security is, contrary to what was originally thought.

Cloud Honeymoon Set to End

4|18|12   |   2:24   |   9 comments

Many CIOs are findng themselves in the midst of a "cloud honeymoon," with little empirical data available about how cloud should perform and with other C-level executives just happy to have cloud. But this is likely to end in the next 18 months, when the hard questions about cost savings, agility, and speed of deployment begin to emerge.

CXOs should be looking at the cloud’s ability to move business processes from enterprise to enterprise. Companies that think of themselves as part of a larger ecosystem in this way can use cloud computing to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage.

IT Suffers From Obama Admin's Jekyll & Hyde Approach to Privacy Rights
Ron Miller
Recently, the Obama administration has been of two minds where privacy rights are concerned. On one hand, you have an administration that vowed to
veto CISPA and mandated open data for government websites. On the other hand, you have an increasingly out-of-control Department of Justice on a fishing expedition at AP and demanding legislation to let the FBI wiretap private, encrypted communications and levy fines if a company fails to comply.

Websites Should Consider Tougher ID Verification Policies
Alan Reiter

Airbnb, now requires members to verify their identities by demonstrating a presence on the web, and by either scanning a government ID or entering detailed personal details. Other enterprises should take a close look at Airbnb's verification policies.
