Yes, I think observers would rate Japan and South Korea higher in terms of technical innovation. Mobile payments are one area where their solutions are more widespread. However, my sense is the gap there is closing as well.
In a way, it's interesting to hear that the US is likely to pull ahead of South Korea and Japan, given that both had much higher broadband penetration than the US for quite awhile.
