Legitimizing Virtual Office Visits

Healthcare providers have been moving to telemedicine treatments, where the patient and doctor can meet online, but insurance carriers are not required to pay for such treatments. This may change, though, as Maryland recently passed a law mandating that insurers pay up.

Acutally, they are not free. They are priced about the same as a regular office visit. Health plans cover office visits so indiviuals only pay a co-fee, say $20. The goal of this legilslation is to have them pay for the same for virtual (telemedicine) visits.

Telemedicine has done wonders for the rural population in developing countries where there is very poor access to medical facilities. Midwives can now seek the help of gyneacologist based in urban location in case any complication arises. Paul I have a question, as I understand the concept telemedicine is seeking free medical advice from doctors right? Why does insurance comes in if it is free in the first place?

Good point. That is true today, but it seems like the health care industry is moving to make it easier for doctors to collect such information over the Internet. Tools are avialable for items like insulin levels for diabetics and others loom on the horizon. The change could help patients (who won't have to drive to the doctor's office to take a simple test) as well as doctors (and nurses) who can spend their time on diagnosing and treating medical issues rather than running tests.

Telemedicine could save some people and doctors a lot of time. Where is live, it's used for some kinds of consultations where folk can't get to the nearest municipality because they live in rural areas.

The only issue I see is that it will be restricted to specialties like psychiatry and perhaps well baby care, where it's not necessary for a physican to actually take measurements or tests.
