Apple may want to do a TV offering, but to meet its goal it would have to address three specific issues that have been exposed by earlier attempts to make Internet TV work.
I am not an Apple TV enthusiast and I don't think that it has a bright future. There are too many barriers and it is obvious that Apple cannot easily deal with them.
I wonder if the pressure on their stock might not induce them to be bold here, hounhosp. I agree with you that they're not likely to overcome the barriers, but they could create a pretty interesting dynamic if they really gave it a try!
Rather than weighing in on whether Apple with succeed or fail, I'll just say I applaud the company for trying to move the ball (or apple?) forward. I think the delivery model for television will change and there will be a synthesis of mediums for tv programming as driven by consumer demand for streamlined devices and content choices.
I'm a bit cautious with respect to giving out praise for "moving" something; I would need to know why they did it! I think Apple's motives are honest--they're trying to build their own market opportunity--but not altruistic.
