M2M is a hot acronym, but maybe it should stand for "Mine-to-Mine" because our appliances exist in a zone of personal information. Managing cooperation of the devices within this zone will allow us to create value and understand and mitigate the security risks they pose.

I think that's true even today, Mary, and it's likely to become more true in the future for two reasons. First, the larger number of devices per user that we're seeing will clearly generate a need to organize them as a single logical device. Second, socialization among users is increasingly socialization between devices, and it's inconvenient for a user to manage multiple relationships on multiple things. We're probably going to see "us" as a logical entity separate from our gadgets to be hosted in the network, and the gadgets then providing a link from the real us to the virtual one. That way everything can be synced and coordinated.

Thanks Tom. I agree that by focusing on a kind of personal network, we can make best use of the devices we have. If I have no link between my smartphone and laptop, I'm not really getting the full benefit of both.
