Google Wallet’s WiFi Problem

Alan had to "fix" Google Wallet with a minor change to his phone's settings, and that doesn't bode well for a trouble-free mobile payments experience.

Hi condor85,

I'm famiilar with McDonald's WiFi, using both laptops and smartphones. I assumed Google Wallet needed an Internet connection and either the WiFi or the cellular signal wasn't strong enough or present when I had used Wallet that time. In fact, before paying I always tried to make sure the prepaid card didn't say "updating," but showed the amount available.

I haven't used Wallet since the cloud-based service, and I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the info.

I don't know how I stumbled upon this post... but let me tell you the reason why this happened.  McDonalds (and many chain stores) use a default att wifi name.  You have more than likely connected to many in the past.  However, after a certain time, they timeout... and you have to open up a browser page and LOGIN/ACCEPT TERMS OF USE in order to get active internet.  Next time you are at McDonalds try to send an email or update your apps witih your wifi on and while connected to the att wifi name.  It won't work.  In the past, google wallet needed an active internet connection to update the prepaid card.

As you may have found out since then... google now DOES NOT need an active internet connection.  They have gotten rid of the prepaid card and now use the "cloud".  They store the last credit card you used... you only need internet access to ADD a card or SWITCH a card.

This should help blunders at the register.

Hi nasimson (Talha),

Once or twice before I've experienced a problem with the Google Prepaid Card not updating the balance and not working on the POS terminal. I've used three different phones with Google Wallet.

The problem is trying to figure out what the problem is -- WiFi, the POS terminal, the Google Prepaid Card backend or something else.

The mobile payment players have a lot of work ahead of them.
