I think I share mhhfive's reaction.  Tumblr really is a blogging tool (but more than that), and Google+ doesn't seem to me to aspire to be one at all.  The restrictions on formatting and including non-text content in actual posts is surely exactly the same as Facebook (which also doesn't aspire to be a blogging tool).  What's the incentive for Google to push Google+ in the blogging direction?  I don't see it happening.

mhhfive - Good point about Facebook. I guess I expect more from Google+ because it's already pretty bloggy. Seems to need just a little push to get all the way there. 

A friend once asked me whether Google+ is a threat to Facebook. She seemed surprised when I responded, no, it's more of a threat to Twitter. 

As long as Facebook is the place where my non-techie friends and family hang out -- real life friends and family, people I've known for decades -- I'll be there. Twitter, however, has evolved into a community of interest. I have some RL friends, family, and colleagues there, but it's a place where I look for interesting content, not news from friends, colleagues, and family. And Google+ is like that too.

Seems like you just don't like social networking apps as much a blogging platforms? Facebook doesn't let you embed multiple photos or videos inside a single status udate, either.

Maybe someday Diaspora will win with a slow and steady community development strategy and give you all the features you want on a federated social app.

I think G+ suffers from people thinking it's a "friends" network when it's turned out to be more of a semi-professional network, inbetween Facebook and LinkedIn. I don't think many people share baby picutres on G+, but there's a lot of news and maybe work-related stuff going around on G+... and maybe that's how G+ will definite itself -- it's not your "friends and family" network, but your semi-social career-building network that's less filled with recruiters than LinkedIn.
