Ok! Must hop to be in a SL video for SL business and do Metanomics and tons of RL/SL things! Thank you Philip for taking to your time to share and Nicole, thank you for hosting! See you all in world soon!
yep thats true seal, but bear in mind that we've gotta figure out how to stream that stuff incredibly fast, unless you want to wait around for 1GBps to the home.
@sealfoss because you're leaving the platform to fiddle in another program, with it's own learning curve. It breaks the immersion. I can't build in Maya with my friends.
also, in world tools would never be able to compete with blender/maya/3dsmax/etc.... and even if they did you would have BIG problems w/ software bloat
I love in-world tools and the freedom to be creative they bring, but at this point some of the most amazing creations are made in other programs and bringing them in-world as things currently are is difficult and they lose so much luster by the time they are in.
no no, the TOOLS, making them more democratic. Spore succeeded because it let people create very easily. Content will be made regardless if LL throws money at it or not. The question is, how can we make the bar lower to have more people make BETTER content quicker?
Philip, how about a procedural gradient tool.... like the Ramp feature in Maya. That would keep people from having to upload/use the bajillions of image files they use for this
@philip: you mean contracting out ways to get content creation inside SL? intriguing... might be worth a call on your guys' blog posts. SL absolutely must keep the collaborative/creative content creation INSIDE the platform, otherwise it'll melt away (see: blue mars)
I am speechless at the moment for a change... would love to thank mr Philip for his answers and yeh it is gonna be a great virtual year again. Exiting winter!!
lordfly... what contract work could we get started viewer-only to improve tools. I'm willing to fund the contracts. Seriously! We've got more dollars for contracting than linden devs.
burning life will be on 100 sims or something like that, meaning 1000's of concurrent people. So, yes, multiple tents. Just like the real thing, I was just there. :)
question: what sorts of things are going to be happening with content creation that will get people fired up for building in-world, not just using external programs? It's my opinion (and I've emailed you about this, need to continue that convo) that SL's strength lies in its internal content creation tools - prims, mostly. Any advancing on the internal tools front?
listening to limitations of large events... i think that's going to be a problem in ANY internet medium. Tribes are too large online for any meaningful chat (even this is weirdly straining)
Question - Philip: Has there been any recent developments on mobile integration or has the idea of a 'slim' version been dropped? (We need to look at in Africa).
seal: maybe. We're a pretty big scalable cloud already, tho. Probably not much smaller than all of Amazon EC2, for example - just saw stats that they were at 40K servers (although we are more like 40K cores).
Philip.. Our company is bringing a Saudi University in-world and we need some help getting support for Arabic chat in SL (it reads backwards). Who is the best person to contact for that?
Philip, when groups have events, is there a way to aquire SL resources for limited time like even for a few hours so when dozens of people group together that lag can be reduced?
SL in 5 years I think will be more like the web with 1000s of virtual worlds and it will be up to LL to adapt to this if they want to stay in the lead.
On mesh support, the IF/WHEN issues I think will be related to getting great performance. Bear in mind that not having meshes was what initially actually made SL remotely possible over broadband!
Meh, I don't mind reposts. Sometimes they're hard to follow.
QUESTION: One of the SL people I know was curious as to if there was a plan to go beyond being "an internet curiosity". He feels currently SL is more akin to a flea market and it's not as open-ended as it used to be.
QUESTION: Philip....What is the intention of the new community partnership programme that is advertised for bigger inworld communities; and how much autonomy will content creators still have?
well this stuff is scrolling by fast... I'm reading. On the topic of leaving SL to other sites, that is fine - people already spend a ton of time in SL, so we're not concerned about that. The web/VR balance should be open to settle wherever is appropriate.
Philip, can you give us the latest stats on how many users are typically engaged on SL? also, what is the size of the SL economy in Linden dollars and in US dollars?
I think one of the paradoxes for SL is en business get peope to their website they want to keep them there. So not sure they want to have their customer going off to another site to do things.

Well given that we are creating the future, it is very difficult to explain this to RL businesses that don't quite seem to understand cutting edge technology.
@Nicole - Over 400 colleges and universities are using Second Life to hold classes, provide creative space for students and faculty, share our virtual campuses with the world, do research, provide student services.. everything you would do on a real life campus. :) It's great for prototyping and modeling, and gives both face to face and distance learning classes more options for engagement.
*waves to Bevan* (look at the link between blogradio, twitter and SL... Bevan and I met inSL and I heard about this from her in FB and then tweeted it) ;)
..but you do behave sometimes like her.your avatar can open you a bit up. We notice meeting eachother in REallife is always a ball while you might be shy in beginning and also what have a feeling about is that in SL some elements is lost like pain or death ..you really enjoy a life so to speak and that sometimes you find back in encounters with others meeting in realife as we are aware that pain does not have to be there or felt....
SL is definitely not just for fantasy. I and most people involved in higher education use it for real life purposes and are as open about our RL identity as we are elsewhere on the web.
answer for Nicole ...ok bits and pieces are me but not all. She can dance much better and longer etc..and looks younger..but it is handy to explore virtual worlds and social media
Nicole - entirely... as advocacy and for collaboration... we are a national NGO in South Africa and connect globally via our project inSL (uthango.org)
my avatar is my profile on the internet..so my reallife remains hidden in a kind and my avi has a story as a skin and in three years never ever will change it
I've also heard of issues about people who basically have a complete lack of respect for others with bloated avatars that slow down everyone else's systems. Do you see 2nd Life needing to put more limitations on the world to prevent griefing -- either due to malicious intent or general ignorance?
I use both Snowglobe and SecondLife-i686-1.23.4.123908. My biggest problem is lack of gstreamer support for audio. It prevents me form enjoying the music and dancing around at parties.
Another concern I've heard is in regards to the age verification system. According to one of the business owners I know, "not all countries are created equal". He feels the age verification is broken.
One of the business owners I know on 2nd Life mentioned how the property is getting more expensive, and there are more "hoops to jump through" now than when it first launched, and that it is more difficult for people to purchase products. He feels 2nd Life has taken a 180 turn from its original concept. What direction do you see 2nd Life moving in during its evolution? A return to more "complete freedom" or try to make it more stable (which in my opinion, usually requires regulation and control)
Art -you should probably have the latest version of a processor and graphics card. Also try not to work on this over Wi-Fi - it's prettier when your computer is newer.
As a premium user of Second Life that runs Linux I am disappointed by the lack of support for Linux. I will probably renew my subscription, but I'm not partically happy. Is there anything thing being done with SL to keep users like me around? SL user Toga Yorkshire.
For those of you who are new to this, we'll ask some of your questions on air, so be sure to keep the chat going and the questions coming in throughout the interview.
I guess I should actually visit Second life to see what's going on with it. I asume there are tools to build your personal environment? I had heard that there is a place for LOST fans and I think NPR's Science Friday has a location.

There's a public-policy war on copyright that nobody is winning, and inconsistencies in viewpoint and interpretation seem to be multiplying. We need to step back and think our policies over again, or we risk having a strategy that fails everyone.
Ultraviolet is an industry-wide attempt to standardize video content delivery across multiple platforms. Apart from the fact that it’s based in the cloud, relies on the DRM system, and isn’t backed by Apple… it sounds great!
The FCC's Sixth Broadband Report has a hidden secret. But here’s a hint: The regulatory body plans to regulate broadband as a telecommunications service.
Once defined by epic journeys, planning, and maps, the phrase "on the road" takes on new meaning in a digital age, where we can make all our decisions using our connected devices en route.
