For 13 years I have been the president of Wireless Internet & Mobile Computing, a consulting firm in the Washington, D.C. area (Chevy Chase, Md.) that specializes in helping companies to enhance existing services or develop new services in wireless data. My firm focuses on business development, marketing, white papers, corporate tutorials/workshops and corporate weblogs.

I'm especially interested in wireless multimedia, such as the business models and worldwide societal ramifications of camera phone photos and videos, live streaming cellular broadcasts, omnipresent wireless broadband and mobile location technologies and their integration with social networking.

I've been analyzing wireless communications for just about 30 years. I started by helping to develop and run the first association in the United States for the independent providers of pagers and mobile phones (they were called "radiotelephones" before the days of cellular).

In the past, I created the world's first: Wireless data newsletter, wireless data conference, cellular conference and FM radio subcarrier newsletter. I also helped develop and write for the first cellular magazine.

I've been blogging since 2001. My weblogs include: www.MobileTelevisionReport.com, www.CameraPhoneReport.com, www.WirelessMuse.com

Website: www.WirelessInternet.com

Please feel free to contact me, either by leaving a comment on my columns or by sending me e-mail to reiter [at] wirelessinternet.com. Thank you very much for reading.

My aunt turned 100 years old this past weekend -- an unbelievable milestone. As part of the celebration, my family did some research and re-printed this list of stats from Quipster, which describes what America was like in 1909, the year my aunt was born. I’ve tried to verify the figures through numerous sources and have made some changes.

For over a decade, companies have gathered statistical Website information -- number of unique visitors, number of page views, consumer conversion rate (if you are an e-tailer), and bounce rate, to name just a few examples. These statistics are useful and convenient to include in monthly IT or marketing reports -- but forward-thinking companies now seek even more insightful information on their Websites’ performances.

Unwanted pop-up windows on behalf of third-party companies. Banners and hyperlinks begging to be clicked for confirmation. Interstitial pages that only disappear after ticking a box, or email addresses used as confirmation of enrollment in some travel club apparently required when buying an online airline ticket.

Total Telephony Transcends Telepresence

11|20|09   |   2:11   |   6 comments

The problem with telepresence is that it's not universally accepted, because video calling isn't. While we can all do video calling, we also apparently worry too much about how we look. If we want HD telepresence in our future, we have to dress down, mess up our hair, and dive into our online life.

America Has Much to Learn About Digital Piracy

11|18|09   |   2:09   |   No comments

The US loses about $20 billion a year on pirated software, movies, and music. But public policy can help stem the tide of digital theft. For example, France has recently passed a 'three strikes and you’re out' law, whereby if after two warning letters an individual continues to download pirated software then his Internet access will be cut off. US policy makers should consider adopting similar policies.
