Pretty impressive to get it all right! I saw some movie reviewer note this week that the winners tend to be those who have mounted a "campaign" beforehand. It seems a lot of trade advertisements, appearances on certain TV show, etc. are a big help in getting that statue.
Not much different than a political campaign it might seem.
I think Silver batted 1.000 in the categories he definitely called. He expressed some hesitation about Best Supporting Actor, and Best Director because of the omitted nominations, but he was right in all the others I believe.
The thing about people who "predict" stuff...at some point it becomes like the people who sell books and advice about getting rich. If it works so well, why don't you use it yourself. For instance, why doesn't Nate Silver predict the stock market, and then get a huge leveraged loan, and put his money where his mouth is?
I'm thinking in terms of outlier predections...the ones that not many other modellers were making. For example, I believe the Boulder CU model made accurate forecasts as far as the 2008 election (which was easier to predict with its type of metrics, economic, because unemployment shot up so high the opposition party was destined to win).
Chris, I agree. Like football, baseball appears to be thick with statistical data, but when it comes to the play-offs that's not much help. Silver could probably build a good model for the regular season, though.
