Do you use e-cigarettes? I'm a former chainsmoker, and I don't get e-cigarettes. They seem to have all the dangers of smoking and none of the appeal. :)
Alison - How far back do HR execs or managers involved in hiring decisions go back on someone's social media sites?
This doesn't answer your question, but Jeff Jarvis uses the phrase "mutually assured humiliation." Eventually, everyone will have embarassing drunk photos on Facebook, and nobody will care.
Twitter has evolved into a hub where users post URLs that point to content hosted elsewhere (although that content might live on other services also owned by Twitter, such as photos and Vine).
@nasimon but isn't this just an extension of the pictures people used to take themselves or even pay a photographer for? I don't know if they still do it, but photographers used to go to hospitals to take pictures of the baby --for a hefty fee. They also used to offer to do so at your home for a slightly older baby. Then they would try to sell the proud parents a package that would include enough copies to send to all their relatives. Now you can just reach them all on FB without having to pay for so many prints.
That is too funny -- sad and true -- @nasimon. Although I have it on good authority (four teenage girls!) that, thankfully, the duck-face fad is now over.
Wild! I definitely wouldn't entrust my iPad to a tot. But there are quite a few Androids designed specifically for children. In fact, Consumer Reports rated them, right in time for the holidays in 2012. "This year, we reviewed five 7-inch "real" tablets made specifically for children: the Arnova ChildPad, Fuhu Nabi Tablet, KD Interactive Kurio 7, Oregon Scientific Meep! Tablet, and Toys "R" Us Tabeo 7 Tablet. (More have been announced since we started our testing.) All of the tested models run the Android 4.0 operating system," the intro to the report says. (You must be a subscriber to read the full article; unfortunately, my subscription lapsed or else I'd share!)
Wired UK gave some free advice in a Nov 2012 article. New models are probably now available, but it liked the LeapPad. Also on there: The iPad with a special shell to protect it from sticky fingers and those tantrums you mentioned, @magneticnorth!

A chunk of users in many of these apps are simply onlookers for instance the older members of instagram who join because of their children. Wonder if they count to active users if they log in every day and post nothing...in advertising sense i guess they do since they would still see ads.

Social media has been with us for a decade -- but employer policies and the law are anything but firm about the most appropriate usage of this powerful tool.
Businesses often struggle to decide which domain to use. When it comes to purchasing a domain name, you have plenty of extensions to choose from, ranging from .com and .net, to .me, and even .mobi. But which one should you pick?
I've been writing about how the next evolution of the Internet might just be an advertising revolution, and how corporate IT can stay involved as the enablers and providers of the technologies that make this possible.
In the 1970 science fiction thriller Colossus: The Forbin Project, two giant supercomputers from the United States and Soviet Union secretly join forces to take control of the collective nuclear might of the two countries. In the film, the two machines discover each other's existence, communicate back-and-forth, share their collective data, and cut their human creators out of the process. The whole Amazon.reader debate is a double-stupid. It's stupid to think that there's any e-book buyer who doesn't know Amazon's URL, and it was stupider to let ICANN launch the whole free-form TLD initiative to start with.
