Rails are good for only long strecthes. In case of mining or other heavy industries rail roads are laid speially for those companies so the problem of using trucks for the last mile is solved.
Yeah, that's a hard stat to have but if I had to simplify my question, I would ask if companies had multiple options (truck, train or plane) or are they normally using trucks to go to train stations (a mix of both).
Of course, the last mile still depends on trucks -- which is better for drivers who don't want to do long-haul trucking. Given that even USPS continues to make money on its package delivery service -- courtesy of e-tailers, eBay, et al -- you'd think the market for truckers that offer competitive local services will succeed.
I would say they would be choosing based on the load, route and cost efficiency, however I do not have statistics on that. Rail maybe slow but it can carry more.
