The only channel I can say I watch on the regular is CNBC. I do watch television programming from time to time, most recently the Superbowl.. where I thought CBS might have ran commercials during the "Black Out" which tide and another product had commercials ready for "gets the Black out" and another which used the term 'black' which almost seems synonymous with the "black out".
other than that I don't really notice commercials on tv anymore, strange. well unless my friends or people I've worked with early on are in them. I've been in 5 nationals 2 decades ago in a span of about 2.5 to 3 years and had the privilege to experience the production as well as marketing perception from that side of it.
I was just thinking of channel surfing using the remote control. True, it often just takes you from one commercial break to another, but does anyone watch commercials all the way through?
I'm going to agree that it has gotten better, as not only have I begun seeing more movie trailers there, but in a few cases, I have seen them there first.

I'm going to disagree with your opinion on the youtube model. perhaps it's the commercials we (you and I) view on the content. The commercials I've seen are usually national commercials such as MSN's new commercial for Windows 8 and movies.
I rarely click away as byt the time 5 seconds are up, I'm wanting more. e.g., trailers and trailers have gotten better.

I spend A LOT of time on youtube, mostly in the VEVO music video section sharing new content across the social.
@jwallace -- In my experience just about everyone mashes the "skip" button while waiting on that 5 second countdown, or the ads are completely ignored if they're forced.
YouTube has a terrible model, although other video hosting sites have worse ones. I'd be interested in seeing the analytics behind exactly how many people mash Skip.
That said it seems as if consumers will demand change and it will happen fast and furious as people stop using sites that use this behavior to consume content!

the formula for youtube ads have been more than impressive.
I'm comfortable stating that most viewers will watch the commercial rather than click 'skip', on youtube commercials when given that option - most have a formula that keeps you watching.

I saw newspapers hire people to sell subscriptions outside grocery stores when they CLEARLY should have been focusing on accelerating into the new.
it is the same for aspiring artists to sell cds outside of the malls rather than pushing ubiquity first revenue later (URL) on spotify and other music streaming platforms on the cloud.
imho, traditional media and Hollywood should be viewed as separate entities. While on the topic of ineffective or distractive advertisements, I came across this, which is the best ad presentation I've seen to date outside of youtube.A trailer plays before the article, however the default option is for the user to TURN ON the volume. then it takes you to the article. user friendly, as in easy on the eyes and seamless.
