I won't comment on any site which forces me to use Facebook to log in.  It always involves permitting an app to access your Facebook info, then you have to go and delete it.  Tedious.

Consumer Reports (consumerreports.org) does not have any ads and that has been their business model all along, since they began in the print world: they operate on subscriptions and donations.

I believe that I've heard that their web site is successful despite the cost to subscribe (I think it's $19 a year). I suspect that is not only that readers don't want ads, but they also understand that the organization must not rely on ad money if it is to provide truly independent information.

(Hmmm. maybe our politicians should try that model. . . ) ;)

One of my pet peeves is something my local newspaper, Florida Today, started doing last year: They now force you to log on using Facebook. You can't, I am pretty sure, create a user account with an email address, which effectively forces some people I know away from participating on their boards (because there are still a few folk who do shun social media). I DO use social media obviously, but I no longer comment on Florida Today articles because I don't want to offend any of my friends. Don't get me wrong: I don't go online anonymously and spout obscenities or anything like that, but I have friends on both sides of most political and local issues and, rather than get anyone in an uproar, would prefer just to bite my (virtual) tongue and avoid the online debate--the exact opposite of what Gannett, the publisher, is actually seeking. 

Maybe I'm just wimpy, but I think the paper should have invested in better moderators -- human and/or technological to weed out the trashier elements -- than force folk to link their personal profiles to comments about school closings, trials, environmental issues, gun control, and other high-profile articles.
