I don't think I'd like to depend on my isp for my cloud. Especially but by no means exclusively Earthlink. The needs for internet access and for a private cloud are perhaps related but certainly not identical. Not just VAR's but everyone beware.
ISP's are increasingly getting into the cloud services business. In NY, Verizon and Optimum (Cablevision), competing cloud providers, both partner with Cisco Network to deliver hosted VOIP services direct to business. Just 5-10 years ago, VOIP was marketed directly to the business by the VOIP hardware provider (Cisco, Avaya, etc.) Now they are moving into private cloud provision as well. VAR's beware!
Good point! Actually, though, he was using things like Netflix, iTunes, etc., to discuss cloud in general and then hone in on what it means for a business. People have an idea of cloud because of the consumer applications; he then took these uses and leveraged those conversations to discuss the business cases for the College Network vs. using Netflix as a not-so-shining example of cloud!
Given Netflix's outage problems, I wonder if they were the best example to use on the benefits of private cloud. But it all worked out, so I guess it's a moot point.
This is a classic case of the benefits of cloud and outsourcing. Cloud enables an IT department to concentrate on business and spend less time on day-to-day operations.
