mhhfive - My sense is the show is about B2B2C deals; retailers connecting with manufacturers to be able to sell the latest hot gadgets.

However, I'm conjecturing here.

Perhaps CES doesn't go by its full name in order to hide the word "Consumer" -- since the show is mostly about B2B deals? (Just like KFC hides the word Fried...)

I don't know that virtual trade shows have ever really taken off. But webinars sure are popular. As are online communities and chats -- like ours.

Indeed, I'd say it's online community that has driven the decline of big trade shows.

We do see a lot more smaller, more narrowly focused conferences. That seems to be the direction of the industry.

mhhfive - The impact may be dwindling but the show itself is getting bigger.

Maybe it's not a place to introduce technology. Maybe it's just a place to do deals.

The Palm Pre was supposedly the last big product introduction at CES. Like the latest Windows phone, it seemed to be a technology that was much admired, little adopted.

What impact do you think virtual trade shows have had on brick-and-mortar events? Do you go to more or less shows, or do you just find different local events to check-out nowadays? Living about an hour from Orlando, I find many companies and events pass through here eventually; hadn't figured that into the equation when we decided to move south, but it's been really convenient and useful over the years!

Yes! We talked about that during today's Live Chat. It could definitely drive a renewed interest in collecting currency! And the Slinky!

Folks have been saying the impact of CES is dwindling as time goes on... but maybe that's because there are so many other tech-related conferences where product launches can make a splash. There's also Mobile World Congress coming up... and it seems like every major city has a tech conference or a TED conference...

I, for one, would like to see Jack Lew's original signature on a dollar bill!

I wonder how many stars of former CES events went on to become real? And to succeed? That would be interesting to figure out.

The US National Security Agency learned the hard way that it can be dangerous to give a contractor too much money and access, with too little scrutiny. The NSA and other government agencies hire tens of thousands of contractors a year to analyze data. Edward Snowden -- who revealed himself as the NSA leaker after fleeing the country -- was one such contractor, reportedly holding a $122,000 salaried position at Booz Allen Hamilton at the time of his departure.

Midsize businesses rarely achieve the same standards of security in their own datacenters as professional providers that specialize in delivering these services to organizations.

It was about 10 years ago when a new generation of software-as-a-service (SaaS) alternatives started to gain acceptance and adoption among organizations of all sizes. And it has only been about five years since Amazon Web Services captured the marketplace's attention with Amazon EC2 and Amazon S3, which opened the door to a vast array of infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) offerings. Now, the third piece of the cloud computing puzzle is beginning to win over organizations seeking to build their own apps: platform-as-a-service (PaaS).

Argument Over Top-Level Domains Is 'Stupid'

The whole Amazon.reader debate is a double-stupid. It's stupid to think that there's any e-book buyer who doesn't know Amazon's URL, and it was stupider to let ICANN launch the whole free-form TLD initiative to start with.
