But companies still love that .com domain. Virtually all US companies won't use anything else, and that's true for many international companies as well.

And with the opening up of even more domains by ICANN, companies and brands have an even wider variety of choices.

These days it's SOP for companies getting started to check domain availability first. If it's not available in .com, use something else.

I wonder how many companies were either forced or chose to use a new name when they added e-commerce to their business? Hong Kong Department Stores chose not to include its original name when it opened its online site for anglers. It would be interesting to see other businesses that made the same decision, either because that URL was taken, it didn't translate well to a .com format, or for some other reason.

I laugh instead of groan. Regarding the topic at hand, it only makes sense that they're pushing their efforts online and into mobile. Their name is also very interesting and I'm glad they've clarified how that came to be in the comments. Good post!
