There's probably been many already. Just not highly publicized by vendors or the end customer.

But the reason why security is such an issue is that just because you have not heard the other shoe drop does not mean anything.

Nobody has discovered or reported the major issue - but does that provide assurance that it has not already happened?

The mobile malware boom is already huge.  It's hard, I think, to gauge its effect on enterprise.

Every organization is contending with mobile devices, whether they are brought by the user or provided by the organization. I think we will see a large malware boom in the mobile area and that may turnout to be the main entry point into the cloud.

My crystal ball says the disaster will not be to a cloud provider alone, but rather to one or more of the companies relying on that provider's infrastructure to provide IT.

I agree Scott, but I am hoping even more fervently that Leon Panetta is wrong about the threats to the infrastructure.

@Mitch:  Amazon's had a few close calls, hasn't it?  I wonder if Amazon has its guard up more than it's letting on.  I'd like to think that a big player like Amazon has learned from others like Sony and is making sure its security is tight.

I really hope you're wrong about 2013.  Not saying you're going to be, I'm just hoping.

My crystal ball says we'll see a cloud catastrophe in 2013 -- some cloud customer will see a significant financial loss due to a cloud app outage or break-in. Not because there is anything wrong with the cloud model, but rather because we've seen a fast rush to adopt cloud and inevitably many companies will have failed to take precautions.

The US National Security Agency learned the hard way that it can be dangerous to give a contractor too much money and access, with too little scrutiny. The NSA and other government agencies hire tens of thousands of contractors a year to analyze data. Edward Snowden -- who revealed himself as the NSA leaker after fleeing the country -- was one such contractor, reportedly holding a $122,000 salaried position at Booz Allen Hamilton at the time of his departure.

Midsize businesses rarely achieve the same standards of security in their own datacenters as professional providers that specialize in delivering these services to organizations.

It was about 10 years ago when a new generation of software-as-a-service (SaaS) alternatives started to gain acceptance and adoption among organizations of all sizes. And it has only been about five years since Amazon Web Services captured the marketplace's attention with Amazon EC2 and Amazon S3, which opened the door to a vast array of infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) offerings. Now, the third piece of the cloud computing puzzle is beginning to win over organizations seeking to build their own apps: platform-as-a-service (PaaS).

The whole Amazon.reader debate is a double-stupid. It's stupid to think that there's any e-book buyer who doesn't know Amazon's URL, and it was stupider to let ICANN launch the whole free-form TLD initiative to start with.
