Matt Heusser - The science fiction novel The Mote in God's Eye (1974) had touch-sensitive handheld computers. That novel was set 1,000 years in the future. We beat the prediction by a couple of years.
@DrT weote: "The companies that are innovating constantly will drive costumers expectations rather than customers being in the driver's seat." - Absolutely. It reminds me very much of the old argument that marketing /creates/ demand. There's a great line scene from Mad Men Season 1 about the role of marketing in creating demand - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2bLNkCqpuY - I thought you might appreciate it.
The companies that are innovating constantly will drive costumers expectations rather than customers being in the driver's seat. They are the one that will have an answer that will work when they will face the question and be able to say "We anticipated a request like that". The companies that goes beyond customer expectations are the ones stay in the market when you check the history.

Yes - I think the best companies are going to win. And to stay on top, they'll need to keep improving. The occasional hiccup - where a company skimps on quality to hit a release date -- well, that will take care of itself. :-)
This leads me to two questions: What are you doing to stay in front, and, if you aren't, what technologies can we put in place so that, when the VP of marketing comes knocking on the door, you can say, "Sure. We anticipated a request like that. We can support it in a month. We just need to do this process and implement this component"?

Hi Matt,
Thanks for the blog. It was a great read. My question to you is do you think this growing consumer demand/expectation is good the advancement of technology? From my own experience, I reckoned that consumer expectation have help shapen and advance many technology products. Do you also agreed that due to this increase customer expectation, many experts are now anticipating out-of-this world requests at anytime.
That's exactly right, Matt. If you feel the idea itself is more important than any kudos to you for coming up with it, quietly handing it off to your boss can be a great way to make it happen. Note that when your boss succeeds within a company, usually you do too; making things happen effectively is self-serving even if you aren't getting the official credit.

It was about 10 years ago when a new generation of software-as-a-service (SaaS) alternatives started to gain acceptance and adoption among organizations of all sizes. And it has only been about five years since Amazon Web Services captured the marketplace's attention with Amazon EC2 and Amazon S3, which opened the door to a vast array of infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) offerings. Now, the third piece of the cloud computing puzzle is beginning to win over organizations seeking to build their own apps: platform-as-a-service (PaaS).
