I agree with you in that I have nothing to hide, but I still would want someone sniffing in my email, which is why I don't use cloud based service now.

@Joanne: My former boss stated that it was part of company culture to "do good even when no one's looking." If we just followed that principle, there wouldn't be any problems even if someone looks :)

I guess people do tend to base their actions on whether the think they'd get caught or not. That's not a good moral compass, and overall, a horrible way to live.

Chuck,

I agree(partially).

What you would not want to do however,is not very simple.

You have to make it harder and harder for them(The State) to access all your Data in one place.

How do you manage that?

Anonymouzers,Maintain Multiple profiles,Different Sets of User IDs,etc.

Regards

Ashish.

Paul,

Your statements here kinda show(very clearly);that you have given up on trying to protect your Privacy online.

Not the right way to do it my friend.

The only Government I like is a Small one.Not one which consistently spies on all of its Citizens for kicks. Not much difference between us today and the Stalinists or The Communist Party (in china) today.

Watch how China has legalized Deleting Internet Messages which are deemed"Harmful" to State policy.Talk about silencing dissent in any shape and form.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/12/28/net-us-china-internet-idUSBRE8BO01320121228

We are very close to seeing the same thing in the US today unless ,Americans resist and protest each and every single Privacy invasion by the Overarching State today.

Regards

Ashish.

Paul,

Have you not heard of the NSA Datacentre in UTAH?

If you have'nt your missing a lot about how invasive the Government has gotten into our Online Lives today.

Be very, very careful about what you post online about yourself today.

In fact,if you don't want anyone to see it Don't post it there.

Regards

Ashish.

Guys,

By now ;I am hoping this fact has become obvious but in case it is'nt;let me be very clear.

You never get anything for Free in life.

If you want Free Email online(in the cloud);be prepared to see your Email Inbox details get sold to the Highest bidder(and this includes the Government).

The Government does'nt even need to pay for it anymore.

All they need to do is simply put pressure on the right executive at the right place and Voila! They have all the information they need.

Sad But True.

Ashish.

@magneticnorth,

When will people realize there's always a way of getting caught!  It's fascinating to see how the Internet works when getting to the truth!

I agree, Joanne. If there's anything that people should change, it's to stop engaging in unlawful activity.

There's no need to change my use of cloud-based email as long as my values remain as they do.  If you have nothing to hide, what difference does it make?

Recently, the Obama administration has been of two minds where privacy rights are concerned. On one hand, you have an administration that vowed to veto CISPA and mandated open data for government websites. On the other hand, you have an increasingly out-of-control Department of Justice on a fishing expedition at AP and demanding legislation to let the FBI wiretap private, encrypted communications and levy fines if a company fails to comply.

The apartment and house sharing service, Airbnb, now requires members to verify their identities by demonstrating a presence on the web, and by either scanning a government ID or entering detailed personal details. Other enterprises should take a close look at Airbnb's verification policies.

The whole Amazon.reader debate is a double-stupid. It's stupid to think that there's any e-book buyer who doesn't know Amazon's URL, and it was stupider to let ICANN launch the whole free-form TLD initiative to start with.
