Scalability around the life cycle, can this be accomplished

Rank: Cave Painter

So the life cycle is being streamlined

Rank: Cave Painter

Well nearly a montth later very busy here now

Rank: Cave Painter

missed the class for some much needed time off, but an excellent presentation

Rank: Cyborg

Thanks again for presetning.  Sorry my job duties kept me from your original broadcast.

IQ Crew

Like the benefits extend slide.

IQ Crew

I like the visual of the current IT model barriers of time, cost and risk.

IQ Crew

I like the fact that CEO's are final identifying technology as the most important external force.

Thank You Marie for presenting.

good presentation. thank you Marie

I love racking up the IE Certificates! so cool!

@Hoinhosp-Yes u will get a Certificate for sure.

Wow!CMO is spending more than the CIO.Unbelieavable!

@Johnroberts: You are right, the presentation was very informative. Are you listening to the archive?

Thinkernetter

@aum007: "They are busy playing golf", LOL!

Thinkernetter

@hounhosp-Yes they were too busy playing Golf!

Thinkernetter

@hounhosp-LOL!!!

Thinkernetter

@aum007: That is what makes most of hte difference between the 2, I see

Thinkernetter

@aum007: "For the first time, CEOs identify technology as the most important External forces that will impact the organization", they didn't know that?

Thinkernetter

@hounhosp-and in their excitement they tend to overshoot the pros of any tech.

Thinkernetter

@hounhosp-the other issue that nobdoy wants to talk abt is that Sales people have to generate too much excitement to sell a product.

Thinkernetter

@aum007: I get you!

Thinkernetter

@Hounhosp-IN a company typically Finance comes out with a fixed Budget for IT,but usually its Line of Business people who decide how to spend the money as the feel fit.

Thinkernetter

@hounhosp-See IT and Sales are very different.

Thinkernetter

@aum007: In the company, who define the IT budget?

Thinkernetter

@aum007: Really? They are not for sales? How that?

Thinkernetter

You know IT guys are really not one for Sales. Its out of their league ,more often than not.

Thinkernetter

@bkcomplance: Take care!

Thinkernetter

@joe: We will continue the discussion online, with on e of your blog, maybe

Thinkernetter

ciao

Rank: Cave Painter

@joe: See you!

Thinkernetter

@Joe-Bye.

Thinkernetter

Its just brilliant! so many people and so many different ideas or bouncing about and creating so much chaos.

Thinkernetter

Hey, sorry to have to bail like this, but it's almost 3:30, so I've gotta skedaddle.  Take care!

Thinkernetter

Guys I am listening to the lecture again and Its amazing. There are companies which have 9-10 different groups focussed on IT.

Thinkernetter

@bakerbar: interesting addition

Thinkernetter

@Susan: Here's one of them, in case that helps (it loads for me): http://www.ibm.com/ibm/puresystems/us/en/

Thinkernetter

@Sectech-Nope.I feel the whole Social Networking model is loaded wid way too many holes.

Thinkernetter

@Joe: I suppose that this will not help to prevent the war room factors as Mary S. said

Thinkernetter

@JOe-have u seen lot of people in companies who are totally dedicated to IT like this?

Thinkernetter

@aum:  Do you think sandboxing pc's that go on social networking sites is viable and workable?

Thinkernetter

@aum: Perhaps...but it also perhaps works both ways (egalitarianism, being what it is.)

Thinkernetter

@klum  please expand on your question..."In the cloud model, is there visibility into the physical location of where data is stored?"...which cloud mode?  Public/Private?  In PureSystems?, etc

Rank: Cave Painter

@Joe-Yes,IT champions are extremely critical.

Thinkernetter

Alas, the archetypal IT guy isn't much for sales.

Thinkernetter

@Joe: The golf course as decision making setting, great!

Thinkernetter

What that sort of thing really comes down to, of course, is having champions in IT who can evangelize the solutions needed in their departments and organizations and "sell" the decision makers on the appropriate solutions.

Thinkernetter

@SecTech: That's something to look into

Thinkernetter

@hounhosp: Of course, the cynical agitator might suggest, "Then they should learn to golf!"  :p

Thinkernetter

@hounhosp: They usually don't, I imagine.  ;)

Thinkernetter

@aum007: But the CEO may not understand everything about the company's need in terms of IT needs, right?

Thinkernetter

@Joe-MY feeling is that today these issues have become more egalitarian due to Social Networks inside the company.Dont u think so?

Thinkernetter

@HH:  That's a good question.  Do Expert Integrated Systems make it easier to secure them ?

Thinkernetter

@Susan-My advice is u shud email Nicole, she is Troubleshooter in Chief here at IE!!!

Thinkernetter

@joe: I suppose that the IT staff will not like that

Thinkernetter

Security and Expert integrated Systems, did we talk about that?

Thinkernetter

@Joe-Ah Yes,the Golf Course.

Thinkernetter

The links that Marie sent don't work for me- Could you let me know if they work for you, @bakerbar?

Thinkernetter

@Joe-what were ur Major lesson u learnt at this 7dee session?

Thinkernetter

@aum/hounhosp: Of course, this is all a moot point when the CEO decides to go with whatever solution a vendor hyped up to him on the golf course.  ;)

Thinkernetter

@marie-thanks for being here wid us.

Thinkernetter

@bakerbar: Ok, thanks!

Thinkernetter

GReat Session!

Rank: Cave Painter

got to www.ibm.com/developerworks/expert to explore the trials of PureSystems

Rank: Cave Painter

@um007: In-house staff knows better what they need to run the shop

Thinkernetter

go to www.ibm.com/puresystems for the first two systems that have been annouced

Rank: Cave Painter

Cloud, Mobile, and Social -- absolutely!

Rank: Cave Painter

@baker-what abt Rackspace and Cloudforce?

Thinkernetter

@aum007: That;s right. Getting outside expertise is important

Thinkernetter

@hounhosp-yes most software has become too complex today for all but the most brilliant minds to read existing code.

Thinkernetter

IBM PureSystems can integrate with and access resources that you may have in AWS through the standard open interfaces available...but PureSystems are not designed to manage the resources that you may be using in AWS

Rank: Cave Painter

@Hounhosp-obviously the final decisions/implementations should all be done wid in-house staffs consent only.

Thinkernetter

@aum007: I've learnt that we can save time and resources with automation

Thinkernetter

Thanks Marie!

Rank: Cave Painter

Meanwhile, new projects and would-be new projects can languish.  This is the pain point solutions like PureSystems aims to ameliorate.

Thinkernetter

@Hounhosp-the Second thing I learnt is that if u dont have experienced people in-house,you should not hesistate to go outside and get the rite expertise.

Thinkernetter

@aum007: I've learnt that we can save time an sesorces with automation

Thinkernetter

@aum: Indeed.  Most of the time and money IT uses up is spent just to "keep the lights on" and keep current projects running.

Thinkernetter

@himani-companies can sometimes be a massive pain with what resources u can and can't use today!

Thinkernetter

@aum007: That is a good lesson

Thinkernetter

@himani-it probably has a lot to do wid ur company's firewall.Try acessing the same thing from ur Home Machines.

Thinkernetter

@bakerbar: Thanks!

Thinkernetter

@hounhosp-the No.1 thing I learnt is that IT is moving too fast for all but the most dedicated shops to handle without outside help.

Thinkernetter

IQ Crew

Oh, okay.  Well take care!  Back to the grind for me.

Thinkernetter

...And therefore able to produce more of your IT budget to new projects.

excellent...

@aum007: But I think she might have an idea about that, right?

Thinkernetter

@Visister555-Website IBM.

Thinkernetter

Marie – thanks for a great talk.  Have questions:

1)I love the concept of one box with multiple OS'es, remote administration, IaaS in general.  Is IBM the first in this space?

2)I was at Usenix the other week and no one I talked with had ever heard of IBM Pure.  I rarely hear about Pure outside of this site, but I think the concept of IBM Pure and IaaS both newsworthy and disruptive.  Why stealth marketing?

3)You said "See it, touch it, understand it."  I'm in.  Is there a website that has a schedule of appearances where I can actually see and touch the hardware?

Or did you answer that already Marie

Rank: Cave Painter

Hi Marie, and thanks.

Thinkernetter

We learned some info very good. Thanks!

How do you cost contain non-traditional IT functions?

Rank: Cave Painter

thank you indeed

Rank: Cave Painter

thak you Marie.

Rank: Cave Painter

Congratulations on the 7DEE graduation!

IQ Crew

Thanks!

Rank: Cave Painter

Thanks Marie for the presentation

Rank: Cave Painter

Thanks Marie

Rank: Cave Painter

Very good.  Thanks!

Rank: Cave Painter

This was great, thank you, Marie!

IQ Crew

"For the first time, CEOs identify technology as the most important External forces that will impact the organization", why now?

Thinkernetter

Engaging turn key solutions. Bam!

IQ Crew

somebody's getting dated... 370!

Rank: Cave Painter

@Catzeye: I try. ;)

Thinkernetter

Jackyan1 - not buffering now, but earlier my audio just stopped.  I went to a different window and logged in again and all is fine now.

IQ Crew

System 370. Groundbreaking mainframe.

Rank: Cave Painter

@tintolou: Why not?  The banking industry has been doing just fine with that for the most part, only just recently starting at a trend of upgrading.

Thinkernetter

@Marie: What does it cost to deploy an expert integrated systems

Thinkernetter

You guys have to remember that all things are cyclical... sooner or later it will go back to the opposite and eventually circle around again.  We see it all the time.

Thinkernetter

@Joe S - playwright?  Interesting...

Rank: Cave Painter

I think this is a good direction. Nothing new conceptually, but if it works that would be a good thing. Still doesn't resolve our data issues.

Rank: Cave Painter

Business and IT are one. Cloud and the aforementioned are becoming one as well.

IQ Crew

370???

Rank: Cave Painter
fly a kite with a keyattached to it
Rank: Cave Painter

@Gigi: A proper model?

Thinkernetter

Good advises to leverage technology

Thinkernetter

I'm interested in how Expert Integrated Systems may help in BYOD implementations...

Thinkernetter

Can business survive with a "If it ain't broke - don't fix it attituide?

Rank: Cave Painter

Is anybody in buffering mode again

yep me too

Rank: Cave Painter

Good timing!

Thinkernetter

Page 16. Next Steps...

IQ Crew

Is there any proper model for Cloud testing

IQ Crew

@SecTech: By making different parts of the system perform different functions can make you save resource (with compartimentalization)

Thinkernetter

They recognize it, are they pushing for the resources?

Rank: Cave Painter

@SecTech, massive innovation and the constantly changing landscape through that out of the window.

IQ Crew

I was wondering whether this is sort of doing things in a better way vs. in a new way.

Rank: Cave Painter

@SecTec - true....but sometimes thinking outside the box is good too.

Rank: Cave Painter

yeah...me too

Rank: Cave Painter

The pendulum has swung

Rank: Cave Painter

@yettaj, I agree. Thorough testing is still needed.

Rank: Cave Painter

Is anybody in buffering mode again ?

Rank: Cave Painter

TS Debby was driving cloud delivery of rain!

Rank: Cyborg

@techgirl:  whatever happened to "if it ain't broke, don't fix it?"

Thinkernetter

How did they consolidate applications?

Rank: Cave Painter

TCO/ROI analysis tools - lovely

IQ Crew

lol :) good point

Rank: Cyborg

Sounds like S/370.

Rank: Cave Painter

Sometimes changing how things work is better...

Rank: Cave Painter

@aum007: Agreed!

Thinkernetter

Slide 15 Exploring the value and implications of IBM
PureSystems

IQ Crew

Pattern creation skills = great

Rank: Cave Painter

@Hounhosp-looking at Compartmentailzation in totatilty its makes enormous sense.

Thinkernetter

The pendulum shifts again -- more generalists, fewer specialists.

Rank: Cave Painter

Not sure if I agree with fewer testers - there still has to be Quality Control and Quality Assurance.  Developers without testers may proliferate lots of buggy stuff

Rank: Cyborg

@uudenis-couldnt have said it better-Bottomline and Topline all together.

Thinkernetter

@hh:  What do you see as the advantages of compartmentalization?

Thinkernetter

How to integrate at very low cost?

Thinkernetter

the actual bottom line is the top line!

Rank: Cave Painter

@aum007 - as would I!

IQ Crew

Compartmentization has its advantages

Thinkernetter

Slide 14 Skills shifts will occur

IQ Crew

@nathan-3.7 Millions sounds very nice.I would love to use the Savings in my IT budget elsewhere if I can actually get them(like in hiring more staff).

Thinkernetter

Time to get through the management can be sometimes huge and require specific stillks?

Thinkernetter

I thought compartmentalization was good, especially when it comes to data storage and apps... has this changed?  When?

Thinkernetter

Extremely fast implementation of a Cloud environment that is very  powerful Consolidate Accelerate
Cloud and easy to use". -- nice testimonial. Gives me hope for IBM PureSystems and applications.

IQ Crew

@nathan: Agreed, I think that having an alternative to flash is great

Thinkernetter

Agreed.

Rank: Cave Painter

Value comes from reduction in heat, ability to focus staff on business-related activities, common configuration and scaled, fungible  environment.

Rank: Cave Painter

Agreed

Rank: Cave Painter

@Gigi: Of cource, but how accurate?

Thinkernetter

Let's focus on the presentation rather than discussions about the tool.

IQ Crew

automation for quik deployment

Thinkernetter

Leads to a need for good service monitoring tools. Most apps should work well within their defined parameters. There will be blips. Monitoring the blips helps manage the larger server load.

Rank: Cave Painter

@hounhosp, not always, but a player not based on flash is the way to go. So something else would be good.  Not sure what it is

IQ Crew

nicole try an android tablet ... I am listening on mine right now!

Rank: Cave Painter

@kkohli - I have a Droid phone, maybe listen via my sp and watch slides/chat via iPad

Rank: Cyborg

If something goes down, it seems that they have less control over fixing it - it may be impossible to diagnose, and it's not hosted in a place they can check it.

IQ Crew

I'd like to see the numbers on value created to the business by IT, instead of cost savings.

Rank: Cave Painter

But I am surprised if anything other than blogtalkradio needs to be allowed.

Thinkernetter

I think we understand the concerns about the audio, but it would be a pity not to take advantage of Marie's time.  Hope you all have some questions for her.

Thinkernetter

hounhop, automated tools are availabile for that

IQ Crew

@tgordo: what browser are you using?

Rank: Cave Painter

@tgordo: It's the same audio widget.  Whatever you're getting/allowing in by allowing the player shouldn't change whether listening to the live or the recorded.

Thinkernetter

@nathan: is HTML5 compability always needed?

Thinkernetter
@yettaj works on Droid leave the rotten apple
Rank: Cave Painter

@tgordo:  All you have to allow is blogtalk radio

Thinkernetter

@nathan, I agree

Rank: Cyborg

120 of servers worload might be difficult to monitor and manage?

Thinkernetter

Not a firewall problem; player won't load without overriding blocked cookies to allow at least EIGHT third-party adserver and doubleclick cookies. Maybe the archived recording won't be so spammed.

Rank: Cave Painter
Penny wise pound foolish
Rank: Cave Painter

@yettaj - I hear you. HTML5 compatibility would be nice.

IQ Crew

~$3.7M projected 3-year reduction in IT costs - @aum007 - nice hey?

IQ Crew

We have these discussions every time.  A significant portion of chat comments in most sessions has to do with audio troubleshooting.

Thinkernetter

@Nicole - it would be nice to be able to listen from my iPad!

Rank: Cyborg

side note: hope this audio cast service is "in the cloud" ... :-)

Rank: Cave Painter

Slide 12 Examples of Client Value

IQ Crew

Private cloud seems to be the best option as you can control your resources, right?

Thinkernetter

Slide 11. These benefits extend across the development and operations

IQ Crew

Yes, this is my point. If you have lots of folks who love to run servers, they have to do something else. First actions could be porting their local environments into the shared platforms. They have to want to do this. Then, there has to be a transition.

Rank: Cave Painter

Although the criticisms here are harsh, I too have been starting to question UBM's reliance on BlogTalkRadio for these sessions when their widget is so unreliable and inconsistent for many, FWIW.

Thinkernetter

As a general troubleshooting rule: If you see the radio player above, you should have audio, and buffering can be fixed with a refresh. If you don't see the radio player, BlogTalkRadio may be blocked by your firewall, in which case you'll have to come back later from a different computer.

IQ Crew

Audio worked for me when I turned off adblock'er and refreshed.

Rank: Cave Painter

@nathan-73% less work hours_Sounds like a Dream!

Thinkernetter

Great case study. Does Pure Apps greatly differ from traditional IT models?

Thinkernetter

I'm on Mac/Chrome no problems audio or slides.

Rank: Cave Painter

PatI - it's probably your firewall or browser compatibility. Please don't blame InternetEvolution. It's user error. Clearly.

IQ Crew

@phenix-slides are on ur right hand side, next to Marine's photo

Thinkernetter

Phenix: You are to download the slides through the link above the chat box. It's not a webinar in the traditional sense. The speaker is talking you through her slides (you should hear the audio -- if you don't, refresh).

IQ Crew

73% fewer management labor hours!

IQ Crew

All I have are the slides....no audio.....tried refreshing but did not help.

Rank: Cave Painter

Uggg... I don't have time for this. I don't think I'll be seeking the advice of a company who can't get a basic streaming app to work properly. Four different, common browsers on two different OS's and still buffering with no audio. Useless.

Rank: Cave Painter

That's good. Also, for internal, need the right kind of staff -- would like to more hundreds of distributed folks into the core tools, and reallocate remaining people into discipline-specific activities. Might not be the same people though.

Rank: Cave Painter

I have to switch to IE to get the audio.

Rank: Cave Painter

@joeperel: Refresh your browser.

Thinkernetter

Slide 10 Pure Application System case studies

IQ Crew

Mine still shows buffering, no slides. How about a webinar to teach how to make online presentations work correctly.

Rank: Cave Painter

@lin: No, audio is good here. Did you refresh your browser?

Thinkernetter

@bwailes: I'm in general practice (though not accepting new clients at this time).

Thinkernetter

Audio started auto when I came to the site.

Rank: Cave Painter

@bakerbar-  precisely.

IQ Crew

@lin: No issues here, in any case.

Thinkernetter

@lin: Try refreshing, then try a different browser.

Thinkernetter

@JoeStanganelli - What kind of law do you do?

Rank: Cave Painter

All I have is the slides? No audio.

Rank: Cave Painter

IBM sells PureSystems for clients to run themselves and they can use them to build out their own private cloud

Rank: Cave Painter

Anyone else lose the audio?  Everything was great until a minute ago.

IQ Crew

Marden, hybrid. Public and private cloud and a mix of Saas/PaaS/IaaS.

IQ Crew

provision time from days to minutes... wow!

Rank: Cave Painter
aall good in ri
Rank: Cave Painter

@sfuerntes: The audio works very well on Chrome

Thinkernetter

Does IBM run PureSystems as SaaS/PaaS/IaaS or is this for local hosting? At the limit, may as well run externally.

Rank: Cave Painter
Using on s 2 skyrock
Rank: Cave Painter

20-30X faster deployment with reduced risk - wow!

IQ Crew

All: If you missed any of the audio, not to worry! The full audio will be available on this page when the live show is over at 2:45.

IQ Crew

All good here in Sacramento !!

Rank: Cave Painter

hello world

Rank: Cave Painter

works in Chrome!

Rank: Cave Painter

Welcome, himanisilky.

Thinkernetter

@tgordo:  Really?  I haven't had any ads or anything using it; you're the first one to mention it, I think.

Thinkernetter

Refresh fixes problem. Works with Chrome for me

Rank: Cave Painter

@davidokc: You should see a radio player above. If you don't, BlogTalkRadio may be blocked by your Firewall.

IQ Crew

IBM PureSystems use cases by targeted client initiative

IQ Crew

i am in

Rank: Cave Painter
One refresh and it worked really well
Rank: Cave Painter

@tgordo: What is too spammy?

Thinkernetter

PureFlex System box looks like a mainframe box but is not an IBM System z mainframe...it is intel and Power based.

Rank: Cave Painter

@davidokc  do you see a player?  are you behind a corporate firewall?

Rank: Cyborg

still not working

Rank: Cave Painter

@kainsamya-most probably ur company firewall is blocking blogtalk radio.request ur IT admin to unblock those ports.

Thinkernetter

Third step, if still having issues: Make sure you're not behind a firewall blocking BlogTalkRadio.

Thinkernetter

Am I the only dummy that cannot figure out how to hear this?

Rank: Cave Painter

Second-and-a-half step: If using IE9, make sure your ActiveX filter is off (check the little cross-out circle in the address bar.  If blue, it's on; if gray, it's off).

Thinkernetter

Still buffering for me?

Rank: Cave Painter

lots of scamming going on

Rank: Cave Painter

Bad player to use, too spammy. At least the slides are mildly interesting.

Rank: Cave Painter

Does PureFlex also include Mainframe?  Because it looks kind of like the unit we have

Thinkernetter

Second step: Change browsers (Firefox, Chrome, and IE9 tend to work best, with varying results.)

Thinkernetter

@ALL still having issues with audio: First step: Refresh...

Thinkernetter

Kyhsin, am using FF, working fine

IQ Crew

@Joe, Debby visited yesterday.. not sure aboput the rest of the week

Rank: Cyborg

Scam just to farm email address', phone numbers and mailing address' to sell of to advertising and marketing companies.

Rank: Cave Painter

i tried on chrome too
