This benevolent act of a little nine year old girl is absolutely praiseworthy.By doing so, she not only able to raise an extraordinary amount for the world wide
charity Mary's Meals but also her act must have compelled hers and a number of other educational institutions to take immediate actions to improve the quality and quantity of food provided.
Plus this event will definitely prove as a warning for the schools administration not to take any department for granted or else they will be on the headline next morning.

Total Streisand effect here, for sure. That's why I really don't understand the board. People should know that on the Internet, this kind of reaction does more harm than good. Not a savvy move on the board's part, for sure.

that taking away a kid's first amendment rights -- even in a country that doesn't have the "first amendment" per se -- is always going to blow up in the school's face.  Also see Streisand Effect, with Mr. Katz' picture.

Ashish - you are totally right. It's unfortunate that such knee-jerk reactions occur. I guess the idea of the internet is so permanent in people's minds that it really affects their judgment, causing them to sometimes go to extremes.

Mary,

The reason for that is simple-"When The Govt taxes you ,they consider it their Unquestionable Right to extract that money from you and the Service they render is a privilige which they can retract whenever it suits them." ;on the other hand when a Private Sector Company Takes your Money ;its because you are handing it over to them Voluntarily because you know they will provide you with the Best Services for their product.

That aside the Private Sector is perrenially worried about what the Competition is doing and so is always on its toes.In contrast the Government has No competition.

Its a very critical difference which very few people Grasp even today.

The Government is there to above All else,Serve itself; You are completely Indispensable.

Ashish.

Ron,

I am immensely proud of what the Internet has achieved here.

Its very much a living, breathing animal which can be moulded according to every single thing/move we make today.

The fact that there are generous people Globally who are willing to contribute to a Good Cause is unsurprising;but what impressed me more was how quickly they rallied behind this Little Girl's cause.

Way to Go Internet! So Proud of you!

Regards

Ashish.

KMT,

That's what happens when Unelected Bueracracies run Supreme in most Public Institutions.

They tend to stifle any and every kind of creative dissent/debate.

Issue is that since most of this happens online much more freely (and the prospective Viewership is so large);Bueracracies tend to get over-sensitive regarding and and every sort of criticism levied at them.

Regards

Ashish.

I agree, Mary. I think schools have lots of knee-jerk reactions to their students doing things online...even good things. I recall a case recently in NY where a student made a video on the dangers of cyber bullying and she was reprimanded by the school. Another worthy cause...I don't get why schools don't get that the Internet get be used for good too.

@Bolingbroke - That's certainly possible. If you want to feign oppression, a tech-ignorant branch of government would be a good target.

Recently, the Obama administration has been of two minds where privacy rights are concerned. On one hand, you have an administration that vowed to veto CISPA and mandated open data for government websites. On the other hand, you have an increasingly out-of-control Department of Justice on a fishing expedition at AP and demanding legislation to let the FBI wiretap private, encrypted communications and levy fines if a company fails to comply.

The apartment and house sharing service, Airbnb, now requires members to verify their identities by demonstrating a presence on the web, and by either scanning a government ID or entering detailed personal details. Other enterprises should take a close look at Airbnb's verification policies.

Argument Over Top-Level Domains Is 'Stupid'

The whole Amazon.reader debate is a double-stupid. It's stupid to think that there's any e-book buyer who doesn't know Amazon's URL, and it was stupider to let ICANN launch the whole free-form TLD initiative to start with.

Subsidized handsets, rather than locked handsets, should be the focus of regulators. We're not getting good deals, not fostering innovation, and weakening our power as buyers.
