10 Most Gratuitous Celebrity Social Networks

Written by Nicole Ferraro

Celebrities always have to be the centers of attention, don't they? Whether they're accidentally leaving their clothes at home before their rendezvous on Mulholland, or engaging in inappropriate PDAs with their neighbor's nephew's cat -- the world is fatally infected with their vapid day-to-day details.

But the Internet has given us, the staid citizens, the ability to take back some territory. Yes, we have our celebrity news sites, like TMZ and Perez Hilton, but for the most part the celebrities are you and me (well... mainly me). A video of Britney dancing -- or flailing -- is now likely to get no more hits than a video of some everyday YouTube crazy busting a dangerous, illegal, or psychotic move for an audience of strangers.

Celebrities can't handle this, and that's understandable: If we're starting to pay attention to each other, who will care when they do something deranged?

It isn't enough they've acquired space on our social networking spots, like MySpace , which has carved out the nauseating niche site, MySpace Celebrity. No. Celebrities need separate, individual spaces on the Internet where they can say, "This is mine, and you're here as a result of your undying devotion to me and my talent and/or instability."

What follows next, in order from least to most distasteful, is our 11-page report on the 10 Most Gratuitous Celebrity Social Networks. These sites are at their best and worst when the celebrities are intimately involved, and our report takes a look at various types at their most egregious. Whether on DavidHasselhoff.com, where "The Hoff" interacts regularly through an ever-disturbing global video series, or on ThisIs50.com, simply a social networking front to push 50 Cent's brand -- each site deserves its fair share of abuse... which we have no problem delivering.

So, here are our 10. Click on any of the links below to read our penetrating analysis of each site.

10) KylieKonnect
Starring Kylie Minogue
Konnect with Kylie! (Or... her publicist.)

9) WeMix
Starring Ludacris
Your primo destination for loser-generated content.

8) DanceJam
Starring M.C. Hammer (yes, we're serious)
Because loud pants sound better on the Tubes.

7) Wowowow
Starring Candice Bergen & Other Celebrious Women of a Certain Age
Where the question of the day is always: "Is it hot in here or is it my ancient hormones?"

6) Kid Rock Community
Starring Kid Rock
The people on Facebook just weren't angry enough for this group.

5) ThisIs50
Starring 50 Cent
Your digital destination for thick women and thugs!

4) Marthapedia
Starring Martha Stewart
A site whose central theme is always either floral or fraud.

3) YFly
Starring Nick Lachey
After reality TV resulted in divorce, Lachey ran to the warm, inviting arms of two guys with a social media site.

2) Icon Madonna
Starring Madonna
Where $45/year affords you the right to mingle with Madonna flacks in cyberspace.

1) DavidHasselhoff.com
Starring David Hasselhoff
It doesn't get much more disturbing than Hasselhoff 2.0.

Number Ten: KylieKonnect... Starring Kylie Minogue

I agree with Root Maniac, at least I visited them in order to get a sense of what they are trying to do.

DanceJam, to me, is the one with more potential as a business - and you can clearly see that it's the one that has the most effort put into making it usable.

A couple of days ago it was feautred on TechCrunch - it has raised 4.5MM in VC funding and recently announced a partnership with Janet Jackson and Judson Laipply (A.K.A. "Evolution of Dance" guy) which, btw, has almost 100MM views.

Based on the informed comments here, it seems some of you have visited these sites. I'm slightly disturbed by that.

I want to be the first of the group to wish The Hoff a happy birthday! I'm sure we'll see a video of the celebration soon.

....but that's why we love him! He's a schmuck, and completely oblivious, and he doesn't care! And he does seem to be the only celebrity on this list who is actually creating new content for the site... kudos for that!

Anyway, thanks for the laffs Nicole!

Glad you enjoyed it! I think it's safe to blame the Hoff for clogging the tubes with his Hoff Around the World videos. I can't stop watching the video of him at the Eiffel Tower. It's just... sooo... disturbing.

Marc, can you share your definition of "social network"?
"Social networking" has definitely become an overused term to label just about everything with a message board born in the Web 2.0 era. The fact that the celebs are using it to label their non-interactive, PR machines makes them all the more gratuitous.

Recently, the Obama administration has been of two minds where privacy rights are concerned. On one hand, you have an administration that vowed to veto CISPA and mandated open data for government websites. On the other hand, you have an increasingly out-of-control Department of Justice on a fishing expedition at AP and demanding legislation to let the FBI wiretap private, encrypted communications and levy fines if a company fails to comply.

The apartment and house sharing service, Airbnb, now requires members to verify their identities by demonstrating a presence on the web, and by either scanning a government ID or entering detailed personal details. Other enterprises should take a close look at Airbnb's verification policies.

Facebook advertising is a lightning rod. It seems neither brands nor consumers are 100 percent happy about the social media site's policies, placement, or procedures. But the real controversy about Facebook ads and promotions is over whether they work.

By now, you've most likely heard about the 3D-printed gun that Texas-based Defense Distributed demonstrated last week. But we haven't heard the last about the censorship war that began soon afterward.

Argument Over Top-Level Domains Is 'Stupid'

The whole Amazon.reader debate is a double-stupid. It's stupid to think that there's any e-book buyer who doesn't know Amazon's URL, and it was stupider to let ICANN launch the whole free-form TLD initiative to start with.

Locked Handsets Aren't the Problem – Subsidies Are the Problem

Subsidized handsets, rather than locked handsets, should be the focus of regulators. We're not getting good deals, not fostering innovation, and weakening our power as buyers.
