About the Internet Evolution Clans

Within Internet Evolution's overall social network we've created a number of specialized clubs, or "Clans" (please don't call them sects).

These Clans are designed to provide users with interests in common with extra services, information, and special offers not available to users of the regular Internet Evolution site.

Please note that membership in any of our Clans is absolutely free (FREE!), and you can join as few or as many as you want; however, certain criteria must be met in order to join each Clan.

See below for a description of each Clan, with its membership requirements:

The Executive Clan is a restricted membership user group within Internet Evolution. It provides business leaders within leading businesses with detailed analyses and research into the benefits and pitfalls associated with mapping next-gen Internet technology and services to their strategic objectives, to increase revenues and improve ROI/TCO. Content is provided by C-level contributors from within industries such as banking, government, entertainment, retail, healthcare, greentech, and pharma. Membership in the Executive Clan is free, but is open only to the executive ranks of the world's leading corporations.

The Midmarket Clan is for IT professionals and executive management from companies with revenues in the $10 million to $100 million range, and/or with 100 to 1,000 employees. Midmarket companies compete effectively against their larger, Fortune 500 counterparts and are no less dependent on Internet-based technologies and applications. The Midmarket Clan spotlights medium and smaller businesses’ operational and managerial issues where technology’s concerned, keying in on the processes, products, and policies that underpin their networks, Websites, and social media presence.

Membership in this clan is open to anyone whose job it is to safeguard personal information, desktops, networks, and corporate resources. In other words: everyone, since security has become everyone's job in this highly connected era of Internet communication and business. That being said, even the term security professional has come to embrace everything from firewalls and filtering to patch management, breach detection, and data protection. There are the never-ending cycles of spam, viruses, and botnets. Internet Evolution's Security Clan helps you keep tabs on what researchers and white hats are thinking and doing, plus you'll receive the clan's weekly newsletter, Security Sentinel, to synthesize all the relevant security blogging from the site.

The largest of our Clans, the IT Clan's membership comprises senior IT professionals and CIOs working within large enterprise organizations. Members enjoy the use of their own online Clan House and weekly email newsletter, The IT Gazette, both of which are crammed with in-depth, insightful, and timely intelligence about the future of the Internet and its potential to transform their jobs. IT Clan members also qualify to take part in exclusive drawings for cool gear such as iPods, Flip video camcorders, and the famous IT Clan t-shirt, and are guaranteed free admission to the IT Clan's in-person events, a.k.a. "Clan Bakes."

A picture is worth a thousand words, or so the old saying goes. So understanding how to use images in e-newsletters effectively is quite important. Here are a few tips to ensure that your images in email newsletters work to your advantage.

Arms merchant or army? That's a fundamental question for vendors in the cloud computing space. Do they just sell their tooling to any and all comers, who then become the actual purveyors of hosted infrastructure, developer platforms, and software? Or do they offer their own cloud-based services, perhaps even keeping much of their technology in-house for competitive advantage?

Most of us go through life knowing that we’re expected to learn from our mistakes and improve. Those who are more conscientious about learning and personal improvement usually reap greater rewards.

Marketers are known for exaggerated claims and stretching the truth just a wee bit. But most marketers I know truly believe in what they sell. Their aggressiveness is based on a confidence that what they are promoting truly benefits the customer.

Total Telephony Transcends Telepresence

11|20|09   |   2:11   |   2 comments

The problem with telepresence is that it's not universally accepted, because video calling isn't. While we can all do video calling, we also apparently worry too much about how we look. If we want HD telepresence in our future, we have to dress down, mess up our hair, and dive into our online life.

America Has Much to Learn About Digital Piracy

11|18|09   |   2:09   |   No comments

The US loses about $20 billion a year on pirated software, movies, and music. But public policy can help stem the tide of digital theft. For example, France has recently passed a 'three strikes and you’re out' law, whereby if after two warning letters an individual continues to download pirated software then his Internet access will be cut off. US policy makers should consider adopting similar policies.
