Join us on Thursday -- that's tomorrow -- on IE Radio to find out more about the challenges of turning a maker of exercise equipment into a cloud software company.

Precor is a leader in the field of exercise equipment, most famous for inventing and popularizing the elliptical machine. Starting in 2007, the company went in a new direction, networking its equipment together to offer customized training and entertainment programs.

Now, an exerciser can leave their machine in a fitness center in New York, hop on a plane to Las Vegas, get on a machine at a fitness center there, and find it has their customized training program and entertainment preferences ready for them.

(Hopefully, the exerciser will have taken a shower during that time.)

To achieve that goal, Precor had to transform itself from a company focused on industrial design and mechanical and electrical engineering, to add strength in software development and cloud services.

On IE Radio on Thursday, we'll talk with Brent Brooks, VP of Network Fitness at Precor, about how the company made that transition. You'll have an opportunity to listen to the interview and talk with Brooks yourself on live text chat. Here's where you want to be:

Gyms have personal trainers for which they charge extra but they could implement a technological solution that helps people know what's next, when to rest. People register their routines and it creates a queue so that people don't have to wait for machines, etc.

@Alison: And it may be time for you to throw away the old not-so-smart exercise machine that can't even talk to other machines and tell them your exercise details :)

To have your fitness routine stored over the cloud where multiple machines are able to access it and program themselves accordingly is certainly a great application of the cloud technology. It would indeed be interesting to hear from the company in detail about the challenges they're facing.

I'm working on my fitness metaphors and puns. Did you notice how I said "warm up" there?

Looking forward to hearing how tech reshaped Precor. Think I'll put on my sneakers and grab a blue Gatorade before the show!
