3 Reasons to Try BlackBerry for Business (Again)

People called it "crackberry" because RIM invented the smartphone addiction. Then they messed up and all was lost. And now here they are again with their noses pressed up against the glass. Should you let them back in?

Did you have a pager? I did. What a sad little piece of tech that was. Twenty characters on a dark LCD and nothing more.

It was a few years after everyone finally had their pager that a company from Canada called Research In Motion reinvented the pathetic little device on everyone's hip. Their technology was second to none, capable of amazingly secure data transfer and real-time push email, welcome novelties back in the day.

Of course, you know the rest of the story. The phrase "crackberry" was coined and if you didn't have one, you weren't fit for business. So strong was the allure of this mighty electronic titan that even the leader of the free world, upon his entrance to the White House, broke the long-held tradition of presidents without personal electronic devices. The Secret Service actually had to spur development of new security software so President Obama could continue to get his fix at any moment of the day.

And then, the iPhone.

That part is history too. As in: "BlackBerry is history." The folks over at RIM simply decided to take a nap for four years and missed the best part of the very smartphone revolution they brought about.

A few weeks ago, RIM changed their name to BlackBerry and released a whole new platform: hardware, software, app store, the works. Is it good? In a word: yes. Will it work? Well, that's harder to tell.

Some disclosure: I own a few shares of BlackBerry (BBRY). I'm a sucker for an underdog. It's that same underdoggedness (if I can make up a word) that makes me want to run out and buy one of these things. Call me crazy but I think there's a place in the market for them.

The question is: Does anyone want to give it another try? Here are three reasons they might:

1. Competition is the mother of invention. When you're stuck on a desert island and there's a storm coming in, necessity is the mother of invention. But back here on the mainland, it takes something a little tougher than a squall to make the big guys spend extra money. Having a serious contender (read: not Windows Phone 8) on the playing field will remind Apple and Google not to get lazy. The fiercer the competition, the faster the innovation.

2. BlackBerry means business. If they're smart enough to spend their resources in the pursuit of business-world domination, they can paint every other phone as a toy and carve out a niche of millions that would sustain the company for years to come. For the rest of us, that means a line of digital devices focused on more than Bad Piggies and Facebook. It could very well mean someone finally living up to the promises that Microsoft keeps making about great business phones.

3. Crowdsourcing. It's important to remember that the market has become interactive by default. Like Apple and Google, BlackBerry didn't just release a new phone, they gave the market another platform. If they play their cards right, it'll be a platform with a carefully defined purpose, one that will attract a brand new community of developers, consumers, hardware designers, and all the money they bring to the party.

The choice is yours. What will you choose?

BlackBerry still has a small but fiercely loyal following. A smart company can build a comeback on that. The key thing would be to find out what BlackBerry loyalists love about its technology, and double down on that. The dumb thing would be to continue on a path of trying to turn BlackBerry into an iPhone or Android clone. 

Nothing wrong with iPhone or Android. I have both, and don't have a BlackBerry. But Android and iPhone already exist, and I (and people like me) aren't BlackBerry's target market, and won't be until BlackBerry can discover or rediscover what makes it unique.

I was recently reminded of another reason why Blackberry is having trouble regaining marketshare.  The Q10 release date was announced for Canada and the EU, but it is still murky in the U.S.  I'm always forced to contain my excitement for BB, since their release dates are consistently delayed.

@ Shakeeb   I'm not sure who truly holds the power in the Android/Samsung arrangements.  While Samsung dominates the handset market, if they abandoned the Android OS, I think their market dominance would slip, and not vice-versa.  Google's software has proven a formidable force.  Take a look at the backlash when Apple removed Google Maps from its iPhone.  That powerplay exploded in Apple's fa when their Applemapping software paled in comparison to Google Map's.

@Douglas – Thanks for reminding the other best thing I like about blackberry is the BBM (Blackberry Messenger). It's always one of the best ways to connect with your BB friends, It even shows if your friend has read the message you sent.

@ mhhfive – Samsung is one of the best brands in the market, especially the new S3 device. I am sure Google will lose a large chunk of users if Samsung moves out of android.

dcawrey - I don't know how Firefox OS will look and perform in the market, but it's nice to see new competition coming into the market. I hear that Samsung is looking at their own OS; do you know anything about it?

@Jason – Do you know anything about the swipe keyboard on Android; I wonder why Blackberry does not have one like that. I have heard that it's easy to use, but never had the chance to try it.

@Jason – I don't like the touch screen keyboard on Blackberry, but I love the physical QWERTY keyboard on blackberry. That's one of the best keyboards I have ever seen. The device I am using currently is a BB9860, but sometime back I had a BB8520 which I simply love.

@Jason – Blackberry has already lost its customers to the competitors, I doubt that they will get them back, unless they do something very different compared to what the other brands offer.

@Jason – you are right; blackberry has done wonders in the business segment of the market. The enterprise server is one reason why most businesses still stick to Blackberry.
