The fact that hackers aren't using them kind of proves that no one is using them! Just as Macs weren't a popular target for so many years, simply because they weren't in use within many corporations, hackers are apparently shunning QR codes because they sit around, doing nothing.
@Alison: well I guess that is some of the thrill of using them...point and click and then see where you go! Indeed many are not optimized for mobile and many are in places where there is no signal anyway like in a subway.
Seriously, though, that is one of the problems with QR codes: They're blind and you don't know where they're leading you to. I read something a while back about QR codes and spam and viruses. Until you click, you have no idea where you'll end up.
Not only are QR codes, one-dimensional and only lead to what the marketer wants you to see, but many times the website isn't properly optimized for mobile users, or the QR code is printed on glossy paper, or has too much information in it and can't be scanned without lining up the phone JUST SO. It's really frustrating when all you want to do is find out about a product and a little more about the company, and instead they point you to some flash site that won't load or you can't scan it in the first place. Give me a URL or text code instead, or let me snap a picture to review later. The novelty has totally worn off.
Also, marketers aren't always smart about using them. My friend told me she saw one on a banner 15 feet above ground, strung across the street downtown. ::facepalm::
